- Department of Genetic and Breeding

This department has 4 scientific staffs. The molecular genetics laboratory is most important laboratory in this department.  Projects related to this department are carrying out in 5 research greenhouse units. The collection of ornamental geophyts is one of the most important collections in this department.

Missions

  • - Collection and evaluation of genetic resources of flowers and ornamental plants for use in breeding programs.
  • - Selection of suitable parents, production of breeding populations and selection of cultivars of flowers and ornamental plants with new characteristics.
  • - Introducing new and various cultivars of flowers and ornamental plants.
  • - Preparation and production of cultivars resistant or tolerant to live and non-living stresses.
  • - Importing, evaluating compatibility and recommending new external cultivars of flowers and ornamental plants.
  • - Increasing the efficiency of flower and ornamental plant breeding programs by utilizing new plant breeding technologies.

 

Targets

  •  Collection and evaluation of native germplasm of flowers and ornamental plants for breeding programs.
  •   Evaluation of imported germplasm for use in breeding programs and introduction of new cultivars.
  •  Using new and advanced plant breeding techniques in creating new cultivars.
  •  Execution of hybridization programs for species and cultivars of flowers and ornamental plants.
  •  Study of tolerance of cultivars of flowers and ornamental plants to important pests and diseases.
  •  Research on the resistance of cultivars and rootstocks to environmental stresses, especially salinity and drought

 

Main research outcomes:

  • - Achieving 850 new chrysanthemum genotypes through hybridization and holding annual exhibitions of these genotypes in different regions of Iran
  • - Production and introduction of elite genotypes of gladiolus by inter-varietal hybridization and iradiation
  • - Production and introduction of elite genotypes of chrysanthemum by irradiation
  • - Production and introduction of superior genotypes of Iris by hybridization
  • - Production and introduction of elite genotypes of carnation By irradiation
  • - Production and introduction of elite genotypes of Hippeastrum by inter-varietal hybridization
  • - Production and introduction of superior genotypes of Freesia by hybridization
  • - Production and introduction of elite genotypes of Zantedeschia by inter-varietal hybridization and irradiation
  • Production and introduction of elite Genotypes of Rose By hybridization and irradiation.
